How to Choose a Mat for Hot Yoga

Hot yoga is a different beast. With extreme temperatures, high humidity and demanding postures (both physically and mentally) you will need a mat that’s up to the task.

  • Go for the Grip. Stability is the foundation of a hot yoga class. Without proper mat texture, sweat and humidity can lead to slipping and injuries. When shopping for a mat, choose a material that provides absorption and grip. Like your favorite denim or shoes, yoga mats take a few uses to wear in - with grip increasing over time. Maiya mats are 100% latex free with an anti-slip technology for even the most intense hot and sweaty classes.

  • So Fresh and so Clean. With extreme temperatures and increased moisture, hot yoga can lead to quick wear and tear of your mat. Maiya mats feature a closed-cell surface to prevent moisture from seeping into the mat and breeding bacteria. When it’s time to clean, just wipe with a damp cloth and allow to air-dry completely.

  • Thick is Sick. Often, hot yoga is more intense than other practices of yoga. This can include holding poses for extended amounts of time which can be uncomfortable without joint protection. Maiya mats are luxuriously dense, with 5mm of comfort and cushioning providing a stronger connection to the floor.

  • Invest in More than a Mat. It isn’t just a piece of equipment, it’s the physical space where you practice mindfulness and connect to a tradition that’s thousands of years ago. With every practice, a part of you is engrained in the mat so invest in one’s designed to be with you for years to come.
